Editorial Policy
CONTENT

The journal publishes, semi-annually, original scientific articles pertaining to folklore studies and research. Research articles, theoretical papers, critical reviews and case studies will be considered for publication. Collections of folklore material will be published in the supplement. Opinions expressed in contributions are those of the authors and are not necessarily endorsed by the Editors, the Editorial Board or by SAFOS (The Southern African Folklore Society).

REVIEW OF ARTICLES

All articles submitted will go through a peer review process conducted by at least two independent scholars of folklore. Reviewing is done anonymously and with complete confidentiality. Identities of authors and reviewers are at no stage ever divulged. Authors should, therefore, avoid identifying themselves by, for example, inserting their initials, surnames or institutional affiliation in footnotes or in phrases between brackets and or braces.

LANGUAGE MEDIUM

English shall be the general medium for the journal. Articles written in English should be preceded by an abstract of about 120 words. Articles written in either an African language or Afrikaans should be followed by an extensive summary of about 1000 words in English.

PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate, typed in 1½ or double spacing, on one side of the A4 paper only. Margins of 30mm should be left all round. The first page of the first copy should include the title of the article, full biographical details of the author, institutional affiliation, and an abstract. The first page of the other two copies should only have the topic of the article and an abstract to ensure anonymity during the peer review process.

Paragraphs should not be indented and should be separated from the preceding text by a double space. Footnotes should be avoided, and any notes made should be placed at the end of the article, before the list of Reference. Numbering of notes is by superscript without parentheses. Notes should be used sparingly, and only for substantive additional information, not single citations.

Referencing should be carried out by means of the Harvard System. Basic elements of the Harvard System are the author’s surname, with the year of publication and reference to the page numbers in parentheses. For example: Python (1999: 89-90). Full reference to the publication is contained in the Reference list, which follows the article. The Reference list must be arranged alphabetically according to the authors referred to in the article, with full name, date of publication, full title of the text cited, place of publication and name of publisher. The title of books and Journals should be italicised. For example: Moony, R.M. 1999. The Quest for Success. Pretoria: Masakhane Publishers. The Reference list should include only works cited in the article.

Short quotations may be included within the text, with single quotation marks (‘ ’). Longer quotations should be indented on both sides, and be typed in single spacing. Headings should be set in bold, at the beginning of each section. Examples should be numbered consecutively, and the numbering placed at the left margin.

Translations should appear to the right hand side of examples, if short, or beneath the example, if longer. In all cases, translations should be in single quotation marks.

Articles are to be submitted edited, stylistically cleaned and carefully proofread. Readability, lucidity and good flow of argument are important. Articles deemed to require extensive language editing by the editorial staff shall attract the doubling of page fees to be paid by authors.

LENGTH OF ARTICLES

The length of the article obviously depends on the topic being discussed, but should not be more than 16 double-spaced typed A4 pages as a rule. The length; excludes tables, notes and Reference List.
